  • PROJECT CUBA 2011 in NYC: Press Release

SALSEEK.com and MetaMovements present PROJECT: Cuba, a month-long tribute to Cuba and its essential historical contributions to the world of Latin dance and music!

SALSEEK.com and MetaMovements present PROJECT: Cuba, a month-long tribute to Cuba and its essential historical contributions to the world of Latin dance and music, and its recent innovations in using dance and music as tools in improving community health, academic learning, and social development.

PROJECT: Cuba is the collaborative vision of members of SALSEEK, MetaMovements, and other professionals who traveled to Cuba on the Marazul Dance & Music Research Trip The Roots of Salsa. Throughout the month of August, we will share our work and research from our one-week journey to Cuba with the community in a variety of ways, from interactive presentations and dance workshops to a digital expo showcasing video scenes, eclectic photos and unique articles produced by SALSEEKs Chasi Annexy and Natalie Maniscalco. There will also be opportunities to learn about the new US-Cuba Travel Regulations and how you can travel to Cuba legally.

To celebrate PROJECT: Cuba, SALSEEK will host a variety of festivities beginning on Friday, August 19th with Havana Nights, an exciting salsa soirée showcasing the work of photographer Chasi Annexy while bringing to life our one-week journey to Cuba in the heart of New York City, held at SALSEEKs monthly hotspot Hudson Terrace, a luxurious rooftop bar and lounge at 621 West 46th Street (between 11th & 12th Avenues) on Friday, August 19th at 9pm with LIVE music by La Maquina Amarilla, DJ Alejandro and performances by world renowned dancers Yesenia Selier, Nydia Ocasio and others. Admission: Before 10pm $12.00 with drink specials and food, after 10pm it's $15.

On Saturday, August 20th, MetaMovements will host a series of workshops designed to bring together lovers of New York Salsa, Afro-Cuban and Casino styles, and take their dancing to a higher level. The series will run from 11:00AM 5PM at Nola Rehearsal Studios located on 250 West 54th Street, with an interactive lunch-time presentation at 12:30 pm about important Havana dance & music organizations and the amazing work they are doing in historical cultural preservation and/or community transformation.

The workshops will provide high-quality instruction to all levels simultaneously, by having different instructors for beginner to advanced dancers. Our staff team includes three well-known Salsa Instructors: Marlon International of NYC, Jay Salsa of Puerto Rico, and Anara Frank of Boston, all of whom have researched in Cuba through the Marazul Research Trips. We will also feature Yesenia Selier of Havana, one of the most knowledgeable instructors, historians and scholars of Afro-Cuban dance and folkloric music in the United States. All participants will increase their understanding of the Orishas and other Afro-Cuban dances, and their influence on all the styles of salsa people dance today (NYC, Cuban, Puerto Rican, LA, etc). Participants will also deepen their understanding of movement, musicality and the Cuban rhythms (including son, rumba, mambo) that evolved into what we now call Salsa.

Following the workshops, SALSEEK will continue the celebrations of this fantastic weekend by hosting an intimate dinner party with LIVE music At Amor Cubano located on 2018 3rd Avenue at East 111th Street. All are welcome to join us for authentic Cuban family style appetizers and drinks including beer, wine and sangria for only $20 from 9-11pm and afterwards LIVE music by Danny Rojo and dancing! This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends in the ambiance of one of New York Citys liveliest Cuban restaurants. For reservations please email Natalie@salseek.com

The following week, the PROJECT: Cuba workshop series continues at Nola's Studios. Saturday, August 27, 11am-5pm, we will delve deeper into the Orishas' unique movements, and look at the profound Afro-Cuban influence in the worlds of Salsa and Modern Dance, experiencing how the study of these historical dances can transform the way we move today. Join Yesenia Selier, Jay Salsa and Anara Frank for intensive workshops, designed especially for dancers of each of these genres, with separate sections for beginners when needed.

On Wednesday, August 31, from 4:30-9pm, we will be joined at Nola's by one of NYC's sought-after Hip Hop Instructors, Ray F. Davis (Hip Hop Conservatory, Alvin Ailey, Steps on Broadway) to look at the amazing connections between traditional Afro-Cuban movement, NYC-style Salsa and Hip Hop. Dance-lovers in each style will adore this evening of movement culminating with a unique fusion of all styles we've studied! All workshops are 1 hour and 20 minutes in length, and are always divided by level as needed.

In addition to these exciting events, you can join us on-line at salseek.com and metamovements.com, with unique articles, testimonials, travel opportunities, photos and videos of dance, music and Cuban cultural experiences being added weekly
